Import VBO files into a track day logbook
Upload a .vbo export from RaceChrono Pro or the RaceBox app and ApexLog rebuilds the session and its laps, then keeps the history next to your setups and consumables.
What is a .vbo file?
VBO is a plain-text telemetry format (Racelogic VBOX text). A file holds a header, the start/finish and split lines, and one row per GPS sample. RaceChrono Pro and the RaceBox app can both export it, and ApexLog reads files from both.
What ApexLog reads from it
- ✓Laps timed from the start/finish line stored in the file. Lap times match the same session imported from .rcz or RaceBox CSV within 10 ms.
- ✓Split lines stored in the file (RaceChrono writes them) become your sector gates on that track, if you have none there yet.
- ✓Accelerometer and gyro channels, when the file has them.
- ✓RaceChrono's OBD channels (rpm, throttle, temperatures, gear and more), when the file has them.
- ✓The GPS trace and speed for the Telemetry tab, the same as for a CSV import.
Only channels present in the file are imported. A file that does not state its recording date cannot be placed in time and is rejected; export it again from the app that recorded it.
When the file has no start/finish line
ApexLog uses your own start/finish gate on that track if you have one. Otherwise the session imports without laps, and you can place the line later and recompute the laps from the session's Telemetry tab.
Sample rate
RaceChrono exports VBO at 10 Hz, while its .rcz holds GPS at 25 Hz, and the GPS quality ApexLog shows reflects that. The RaceBox VBO file we tested was recorded at 25 Hz.
VBO, .rcz or CSV: which one?
From RaceChrono, prefer .rcz when you have the choice: its GPS is 25 Hz rather than the 10 Hz of the VBO export. For RaceBox, the VBO and CSV exports of the same session gave matching lap times in our tests, so use whichever your app offers. VBO is the right pick when it is the file you have.
How to import in three steps
- 1
Export the session as a VBO file from RaceChrono Pro or the RaceBox app.
- 2
Upload it to ApexLog (drag-and-drop on /imports), preview it and import it to a new or existing track day.
- 3
Get the session with its laps, lap times and a share link.
FAQ
- Which apps can export a VBO that ApexLog reads?
- We have tested VBO files from RaceChrono Pro and the RaceBox app. Other apps and loggers also write the format, but we have not tested them, so we do not list them as supported.
- How do I export a VBO file?
- In RaceChrono Pro or the RaceBox app, open the session, use its export or share option and choose VBO as the format. Menu names differ between app versions.
- Can I upload a VBO file from the ApexLog mobile app?
- Not yet. The mobile app does not take .vbo files, so upload them on the web.
- Is it free?
- Yes, fully free during beta. See pricing for future plans.
