FWD vs AWD on the same track: Golf GTI Edition 50 vs Golf R at Silesia Ring

Two Golfs, one track, one amateur driver, full telemetry on both. Lap times, tire pressures, wear and OBD data from the GTI Edition 50's first track day — next to a season of Golf R laps at Silesia Ring.

Last season I did four track days at Silesia Ring in a Mk8 Golf R. This season I swapped it for a GTI Edition 50 and took it to the same track for its first track day. Same driver, same layout, both cars logged lap by lap — which makes this one of those comparisons people argue about in forum threads, except this time the data is public:

Golf R (AWD, 320 hp): 2:00.554 personal best, set on its fourth track day. GTI Edition 50 (FWD, 325 hp): 1:58.006 — on its first.

So the front-wheel-drive Golf beat the all-wheel-drive Golf by 2.5 seconds. Before anyone takes that as a drivetrain verdict: it isn’t one, and the same data explains why.

Both cars stock apart from what’s listed. The one modification on the GTI — front pads plus Motul RBF 660 fluid — went in before its first session, because brakes were the thing that gave up first on the R.

What this comparison is, and what it isn’t

Two things sit between these two lap times besides the driven axle:

  • Tires. The R lapped on P Zeros — a street tire. The Edition 50 comes from the factory on the Potenza Race, a semi-slick. That is a real difference in what the car can do in every corner, and it came with the car, not from a parts catalog.
  • Seat time. The R’s 2:00.554 closed out a season that started at 2:06.955. Ten sessions of learning the same track happened between my first Silesia lap and the GTI’s first session. The GTI didn’t start from zero — the driver had the R’s season in his hands.

Same width, same rim size, same track, same amateur driver — but different tires and a year apart. The numbers below are what was recorded. What they prove about FWD vs AWD is up to you.

Six seconds over a season, on the same tire model and OEM brake spec the whole time — that’s what learning a track looks like in a logbook.

The GTI Edition 50’s first day, session by session:

Lap 3 of session 1 — the car’s third lap on a track, ever — was already a 1:59.963, and that with the gearbox dropping to manual mid-lap. The day’s fastest lap came in the last session, on tires that had already lost most of a millimeter of tread. Session-to-session context is on the GTI’s progression page.

What the pressures did

The Edition 50 left the pits for session 1 at 2.5 bar cold all around. Twenty minutes later the fronts read 3.1 bar hot and the outside shoulders looked used well beyond their 29 laps. For the rest of the day the fronts started at 2.2 cold and stabilized at 2.8 hot.

Times in sessions 2 and 4 came down about half a second from session 1 — one change on one day, so the data records the shift, not a controlled before/after. The pressures themselves are logged per session on the shared pages above; the reasoning behind cold vs hot targets has its own post.

Front tread on the Potenza Race: 5.4 mm new, 4.8 mm at the start of the day, 3.8 mm after 29 laps. One track day, one millimeter — on factory camber (−2.0°) and 235s under a car that puts 420 Nm through the front axle. That line item is exactly why tread depth has a column in the logbook.

What the OBD channels recorded

The R’s season was timed with RaceChrono Pro on phone GPS. The GTI records through the same app, but with a RaceBox Mini feeding GPS at 25 Hz — and its sessions carry nine OBD channels from a Bluetooth reader on top: RPM, gear, throttle, accelerator position, engine load, speed, coolant and intake temperature, and fuel level. From the 23 July sessions:

  • Peak GPS speed: 201.7 km/h, session after session — 201.68, 201.42, 201.31, 201.47. Consistent enough to be boring, which is what you want from a stock powertrain.
  • Coolant: 77–108 °C across the four sessions. It climbed to the same ~106–108 °C ceiling in every session and stayed there — recorded, so now there’s a baseline for the next event.
  • Intake temperature: 30 °C in the cool morning session, up to 60 °C in the afternoon.
  • Fuel level: read straight from OBD, so each session’s setup snapshot got its starting fuel filled in without me writing anything down.

The brake footnote

The reason the GTI got Endless pads before its first track day is that the R never made it through one without brake complaints on OEM hardware. Four twenty-minute sessions later: no fade I could feel, pedal the same in session 4 as in session 1. One data point, driver-reported, but the pad swap and fluid are in the setup log, so whoever looks at the comparison sees exactly what braked which lap times.

Two cars, one history

None of this settles FWD vs AWD — one car ran better tires, the other had a less experienced driver in it. What made the comparison possible at all is that both cars’ track history lives in the same logbook: every session with its laps, pressures, tire set, pad set and conditions, from the R’s first 2:06 to the GTI’s first 1:58.
